How do I write my poetry?

I make sure to give it my all when I write a poem, because I believe that poetry can be just as awesome as any art form.  I am not into poems that sound like narratives.  I want the reading of the poem to be an experience and to be remembered.  If the experience can have a positive effect than more the better.  With a poem the poet doesn't need to impress others with his/her skill, but it requires ability and practice to begin to get good at writing poetry.  Also poetry is not a journal of feelings so much, an expression of "I".  That gets drippy and the word I tends to come up a bit too much.
