Unveiling a new website, the Democratic National Committee made clear that it would try to paint Mr McCain as a hypocrite who is no different from President George W Bush.
On the website, Mr McCain is shown "debating with himself" by the use of recordings of past statements that appear to show him contradicting himself on whether Saddam Hussein presented a "clear and present danger" or on the effectiveness of the initial strategy in Iraq.
After each round a picture of a laughing Mr Bush pops up. Then, at the end, comes the message: "No matter which Mr McCain you listen to, he only offers a third Bush term on Iraq."
Mr McCain currently leads both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in opinion polls but Democrats believe he is vulnerable on Iraq, his "straight talker" image and his age - at 71, he would be the oldest president ever to take office.
(This is weak dirt, get meaner and nastier)
